Texas DPS Learner’s Permit Practice Exam

When driving down a steep grade in a car with a standard transmission, using a low gear is the most effective choice. This action enables engine braking, which helps to control your speed without relying solely on the brakes. In a low gear, the engine's resistance can slow the vehicle, reducing the risk of overheating the brakes and maintaining better control. This is particularly important on steep descents, where excessive speed can lead to dangerous situations.

Using a higher gear would increase your speed, which is unsafe on a steep decline. Continuously applying the brakes can lead to brake fade, where the brakes lose effectiveness due to overheating. Coast down in neutral can be risky, as it removes control over acceleration and engine braking capabilities, making it more challenging to react to sudden changes in the road or obstacles. Thus, shifting to a low gear is the best practice for safely managing speed on steep grades.
